A majority of people are familiar with the term “Attar”. However, not many people know what the distinction is between an Attar and a Perfume. Actually, these two types of oils are very different. Some might even say that they are opposites. So what is the difference? Read this article to find out!

When it comes to fragrance, there are a lot of different terms that get thrown around. Perfume, Attar, essential oil, etc. What do they all mean? And more importantly, what’s the difference between them?

Perfume is perhaps the most well-known type of fragrance. It’s a mixture of different chemicals that are designed to produce a pleasing scent. The majority of perfumes are alcohol-based, which helps to carry the scent and keep it from evaporating too quickly.

Attar, on the other hand, is made from natural fragrant oils and doesn’t contain any alcohol. Because of this, Attars tend to be more concentrated than perfumes. They also last longer on the skin since they don’t  evaporate as quickly.

Essential oils are even more concentrated than Attars. They’re also purer since they’re made from distilling plant materials (rather than using chemicals like perfumes do). Essential oils are usually used in aromatherapy and aren’t meant to be worn on the skin like perfume or Attar.

Role of Alcohol in a Fragrance

One of the main differences between perfume and Attar is the role of alcohol in each respective fragrance. Perfume typically contains a high concentration of alcohol, which evaporates quickly on the skin and leaves behind the scent of the fragrance. Attar, on the other hand, contains a lower concentration of alcohol and often has a base oil that helps to extend the life of the fragrance on the skin.

Difference of Ingredients

While there exists a range of perfumes without alcohol in the market, the majority of Perfumes are made up of a combination of essential oils, alcohol, and water. The essential oil is what gives the perfume its scent, while the alcohol and water helps to dilute the oils and make them easier to apply to your skin. Because of the water content, perfume typically doesn’t last as long as Attar. Basically, Synthetic molecules and alcohol make up a perfume.

Attar, on the other hand, is made up purely of perfume oils. They are typically created using a traditional method of hydro-distillation, with the majority of them containing sandalwood oil as a basis. Parts of plants, such as roots, petals, and leaves, are utilized as raw materials in the production of attars.

This means that it’s more concentrated than perfume, so a little goes a long way. It also means that it will last longer on your skin since there’s no water to evaporate. However, because it’s more concentrated, it can sometimes be more difficult to apply evenly.

When compared to perfumes, attars are biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Because of the presence of chemicals in general, you cannot mix perfume with water in our water bodies or in the air.

While attars are natural, some of our favorite perfumes are made with chemicals. Attars are made using flowers, whereas perfumes are made with chemicals that can be hazardous. However, this varies from person to person and skin type to skin type. You should also test it out because some people are really allergic to genuine natural items.

The Key difference – Price

Often it’s believed that if one wants to buy a pure Attar, he needs to pay a lot of money because attars are quite difficult to come by, and you must be skilled in recognising a genuine attar because the market nowadays is flooded with counterfeits.

At Aranyam however, you can get pure Attars without Alcohol in a pocket-friendly and justified price with  products ranging from herbal to floral attars.

Additionally, when it comes to high-end perfumes, the labels matter a lot. Some designer perfumes are extremely expensive, while others are inexpensive or inexpensive, which many of us choose owing to our financial constraints.

So which one should you go for? It really depends on your personal preference. If you want something that will last all day long, go for Attar. If you’re looking for something that’s easier to apply, go for perfume.

Perfume and Attar are two very different products, each with their own unique benefits. Perfume is typically a more expensive product, but it can last longer and be more potent. Attar, on the other hand, is often less expensive and  it’s also more natural and can be safer for sensitive skin.
